Who Else Knows Your Online Banking Information?

Hopefully you aren't the only person who knows where you keep your money and your usernames and your passwords for your accounts.

If you are, you might be asking for trouble.

If that sounds a bit counterintuitive, it's because we're not talking about the security of your information — we're talking about preparing for the unexpected.

After reading Jean Chatzky's column in the August issue of Money, which discussed leaving a "letter of instruction" to your kids before you die, I had a realization.

If I die, my wife wouldn't know where to go to find our money.

It's not because I'm hiding it, but because the accounts, usernames and passwords are all in my head. And if that head isn't working, well, then those names and numbers aren't coming out.

Does your spouse or child or next-of-kin know where your money is parked and how to get it? If they don't, drop what you're doing and tell them.

I did. And that's one less thing I have to worry about.
